DeAngelis launches ‘Titanic’ prequel

Group developing $28 mil TV miniseries

Italy’s DeAngelis Group is developing “Titanic: The Untold Story of How it All Began,” a TV miniseries structured as a $28 million co-production.

Conceived by Italo pubcaster RAI’s fiction chief Fabrizio Del Noce, the epic will unspool over 12 one-hour episodes.

It is being co-financed by RAI, the U.K.’s Future Films, France’s Play Prods., Wilshire Films in the U.S. and Canada’s Fremantle Corp.

DeAngelis Group prexy Guido DeAngelis said talks are also ongoing with two Teutonic networks and other broadcasters.

Shooting on “Titanic” is skedded to start in May in Ireland, where the ship was built. A 2012 delivery is planned, to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the massive luxury liner’s tragic maiden voyage. Casting has not been determined.

Skein will turn on the planning and construction of what was the world’s largest passenger vessel and the drama during the 15 years it took to build what was meant to be an unsinkable ship.Past high-profile DeAngelis skeins include “Caesar,” toplining Jeremy Sisto, which aired on TNT Stateside, and “The Borgias,” starring Paz Vega. Also in the company’s pipeline is an English-language Maria Callas biopic.
