Cohen to head BBC1

Exec saw success at youth-skewed BBC3

LONDON — The BBC has tapped Danny Cohen, head of youth-skewed BBC3, as the controller of the U.K.’s most popular TV channel, BBC1.

Cohen, 36, said to be the web’s youngest head, was widely expected to land the gig ever since outgoing controller, Jay Hunt, was headhunted last month to be Channel 4’s chief creative officer.

Cohen will be in charge of a £1.3 billion budget (£2.08 billion) and a channel, driven by hits such as “Doctor Who” and “Strictly Come Dancing,” that is well-regarded by auds and the creative community.

Cohen, who will start immediately, was hailed by his boss, BBC Vision director Jana Bennett, “as one of the most talented TV executives of his generation.” – — Steve Clarke
