War is Hell, musically speaking

While it appears we’ll have to wait a while for anyone to address the long-running conflicts in the Middle East musically, a couple of ambitious releases out this month look back at music inspired by 19th- and 20th-century wars.

Bloody On Aug. 24, Tomkins Square in New York will issue “Bloody War,”  a collection of 15 tracks, recorded between 1924 and 1939, inspired by the Civil War, the Spanish-American War and World War I. Co-produced by the label’s Josh Rosenthal and Christopher King, the package leans heavily on early hillbilly acts — Frank Hutchison, Darby & Tarlton, Buell Kazee, Ernest Stoneman, the Dixon Brothers — and promises a repertoire of battle songs ranging from the humorous to the sardonic. A portion of the proceeds from the album goes to Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.
