Even a recovering rock critic has to love list issues — you know, those special “collector’s editions” that run down the top 100 guitarists, songwriters, albums, whatevers. English mags like Mojo have built their readership on such circulation-building ploys. On these shores, Rolling Stone is the list mag of record.
RS’s latest issue serves up a fairly irresistible list: the publication’s estimation of the 100 greatest songs by the Beatles. You can click through the top 10 here. A little predictable? Perhaps. The biggest surprise: two George Harrison tunes near the apex. For our own No. 1, we would have opted for “Strawberry Fields Forever.” You probably have your own.
One thing’s for sure: Coming after the mag’s consecutive Katy Perry and “True Blood” covers, the Fabs are a definite palate cleanser.
