L.A.’s Cinefamily, which kicks off the Don’t Knock the Rock Festival tonight, is presenting another special event at the Silent Movie Theater on Sunday: a fundraiser screening of the silent 1916 version of Jules Verne’s “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” with a live score composed and performed by Stephen Merritt of the Magnetic Fields.
Merritt debuted his score in May at the San Francisco International Film Festival (where Dengue Fever premiered their score for “The Lost World” last year). At the July 11 event, the author of “69 Love Songs” will be joined by accordionist Daniel Handler, tuba player Johnny Blood and organist David Hegarty. The group will accompany director Stuart Paton’s lavish production, which was distinguished by some of the first underwater photography on screen and a full-scale mock-up of Captain Nemo’s submarine the Nautilus.
Tickets for the event range from a $35 general admission to $120 (for two-person couches) and $180 (for three-person couches).
