The free and idiosyncratic music rag LA Record, soon to move from monthly to quarterly publication, has been celebrating its 100th issue with a series of hometown events. On July 24, the mag will present a night of rock ‘n’ roll and rockabilly bands from the Wild Records label at the Echoplex in Echo Park.
The under-the-radar imprint’s bands — Luis and the Wildfires, Omar and the Stringpoppers, the Rhythm Shakers, Pachuco Jose y Los Diamantes, Santos — and its iconoclastic owner Reb Kennedy were profiled by Record editor Chris Ziegler in the Los Angeles Times Magazine in June.
The East Side has long been a hotbed of devoted rockabilly fandon, but the indigenous acts spawned by the scene seldom play outside their bailiwick, so the Wild showcase will be a superior way to sample the sound. Don’t go expecting the usual revivalism, though — the poster for the gig includes shots of the Clash, the Ramones and the New York Dolls aside pix of Elvis, Eddie Cochran and Ritchie Valens.
