Dishin’ and dissin’ on Sugar Hill Records

Sugarhill+Gang The Village Voice uses the release of a new compilation of Sugar Hill Records hits as the occasion for a scorching interview with house drummer Keith Le Blanc, who serves up some dirt on the foundational rap label's sometimes seedy business practices.

Sugar Hill was operated by Joe Robinson and his wife Sylvia (who, as half of Mickey & Sylvia, cut "Love Is Strange, and scored the solo hit "Pillow Talk"). The label released many of the first major rap hits, including "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugar Hill Gang (pictured) and "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five.
