BMI London Awards honors song scribes

'Only You Can Love Me' wins song of the year

Songs waxed by Keith Urban, Jay Sean and Cascada topped the BMI London Awards, presented at London’s Dorchester Hotel on Tuesday night.

Event feted members’ most performed songs on U.S. radio and television from European and Asian performing rights societies represented in the U.S. by BMI.

Urban’s hit “Only You Can Love Me This Way” was honored as the BMI Robert S. Musel Award for song of the year. Co-written by Steve McEwan and John Reid, tune was published by SonyATV Music Publishing (PRS).

Sean’s “Down,” co-written by the artist, Jared Cotter and Lil Wayne and published by Bucks Music Group (PRS), was named college song of the year. Cascada’s “Evacuate the Dance Floor,” written by Allan Eshuijs and published by Talpa Music/Songkitchen Music Publishing (BUMA), took home the BMI Dance Award.

Tony winner Don Black (“Sunset Boulevard”), whose pop hits include “To Sir With Love,” “I Love New York” and five James Bond title themes, was honored as a BMI Icon. He joins such past honorees as Donovan, Peter Gabriel, Bryan Ferry, Ray Davies and Van Morrison.
