Lionsgate horror pic scares up $9.4 million in first outing

“The Last Exorcism” enterered a sparse field of new films on Friday to take the top spot at the box office.

The Lionsgate horror pic earned about $9.4 million in 2,874 runs, besting Sony’s “Takers,” which slides into its first week at No. 2 with about $7.5 million in 2,206 engagements. Another Lionsgate pic, “The Expendables,” continues to perform well in its third frame, grabbing about $2.7 million in 3,398 runs. Sony’s “Eat, Pray, Love,” also in its third week, earned about $2.1 million in 3,108 engagements. The Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell buddy pic “The Other Guys,” also from Sony, took in about $1.9 million in 3,181 runs.

Fox pic “Vampires Suck” made an estimated $1.7 million in 3,233 engagements. Warner Bros.’ “Inception” earned about $1.4 million in 2,070 runs. Rounding out the bottom three were Miramax’s “The Switch,” (about $1.5 million in 2,017 runs), Universal’s “Nanny McPhee Returns” (about $1.3 million in 2,798 runs) and Fox’s “Avatar” (about $1.2 million in 811 runs).
