Touring shows fall due to holiday

Road grosses

NEW YORK Road grosses fell 11.9% in Week 6 (June 28-July 4) as the holiday weekend slowed attendance across the country. The total gross for the 10-show slate was $9,665,845. All but two productions saw their totals drop this week, though a pair of them — “Dreamgirls” and “Mary Poppins” — took the stage for fewer than the standard eight performances.

First lady Michelle Obama brought daughters Malia and Sasha to see the opening night of “Mary Poppins” at the Kennedy Center. Though grosses were down, “Wicked” showed no signs of slowing down — its numbers stayed nearly the same in St. Louis and San Francisco, while the first company continued its torrid run through Texas. After setting a high-mark five weeks in a row in Dallas, the production established another record at Houston’s Hobby Center with $1,487,659.
