Theater World Awards honor stage bows

Johansson, Hill, Chalk among honorees

Tony nominees Scarlett Johansson (“A View from the Bridge”), Sahr Ngaujah (“Fela!”), Jon Michael Hill (“Superior Donuts”) and Eddie Redmayne (“Red”) are among the dozen thesps to have won a Theater World Award for outstanding debut perf on the Main Stem of Off Broadway.

Stephanie Umoh (“Ragtime”) and Chris Chalk (“Fences”) are also on the roster of winning performers drawn from Broadway shows.

Off Broadway winners include Bill Heck for his perf in Horton Foote marathon “The Orphans’ Home Cycle,” Michael Urie for “The Temperamentals” and Nina Arianda for “Venus in Fur.”

Org traditionally taps 12 actors, six male and six female, for the annual kudos, first presented in 1945. Winners were selected by a team of journos including David Cote, Joe Dziemianowicz, Peter Filichia, Harry Haun, Matthew Murray, Frank Scheck and Linda Winer.

Awards will be presented at a ceremony at Off Broadway’s New World Stages June 8.
