Some women sponsored some men exploring the lives of some men in “Some Men” — all for charity — Monday night at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills.
Terrence McNally’s contemporary gay chronicle proved an inspired fundraising kickoff to the gay and lesbian oral history project “Testimony,” organized by Courage Campaign. The author presided over a staged reading of the play’s L.A. premiere, presented under the aegis of 25 distaff showbizzers including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Angela Lansbury and Cherry Jones, with Lily Tomlin bringing her dry wit to the stage directions.
“I set out to write a play about men who love other men,” McNally said, “and how their lives have changed until marriage is inevitable.”
But cast member Alan Cumming said, “We haven’t come that far. Until we can be seen as equals, we’ve escaped from the closet but there’s still a big, fat government lock on it.”
