Robert Wilson nabs Robbins prize

Influential award comes with $100,000

Venerable legit and opera helmer Robert Wilson has picked up the 2010 Jerome Robbins Award, which comes with a cash prize of $100,000.

Kudo, handed out by the foundation created by legendary director-choreographer Robbins (“West Side Story,” “Fiddler on the Roof”), goes to influential figures or institutions in the performing arts world, with prior trophies going to Mikhail Baryshnikov, Twyla Tharp and Brooklyn Academy of Music, among others.

Wilson (“Einstein on the Beach,” “The Black Rider”) — also a choreographer, designer and visual artist — was a leading figure in the downtown New York arts scene in the 1970s and has gone on to become a prominent creative on the international theater landscape.

Prize money will go toward the work of the Watermill Center, the performance lab founded by Wilson in 1992, and toward the relocation of the Center’s Manhattan offices.
