The Mormon musical by the South Park creators has bypassed Off Broadway in favor of Broadway, where the show will premiere next year.
Tuner, now titled “The Book of Mormon,” had previously been skedded to play later this year at Off Broadway’s New York Theater Workshop. Show will now bow in March 2011 in a commercial Main Stem production from Scott Rudin and Anne Garefino, exec producer of Comedy Central skein “South Park.”
Musical pairs “Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone with two “Avenue Q” creatives, composer-lyricist Robert Lopez and helmer Jason Moore. Parker and Moore (“Shrek the Musical”) will co-direct.
Specifics of the plot are being kept under wrap, although the storyline is said to follow a couple of modern-day Mormons. Casting, creative team and theater details remain to be confirmed.
