Sam Mendes will direct Kevin Spacey in Shakespeare’s “Richard III” in the title role at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, with an opening date in February 2012. Show will kick off the third and final season of Mendes’ international series The Bridge Project, which has been pushed back from 2011 to allow the company to beef up the touring portion of the production.
“Richard III” will premiere at BAM and moves to the Old Vic in London following a brief tour. The show will travel more extensively after the May 2012 London engagement, from August through October.
“‘Richard III’ is a play that I love, and a role I think Kevin is born to play,” said Mendes. This will be the pair’s first collaboration since 1999’s “American Beauty.”
Spacey, who is serving as the Old Vic’s a.d., said that he wants to make “an argument for the living theater in all the major cities that we visit,” with an educational program that complements the production. Bank of America continues to sponsor the series.
