Eddie Izzard will step into Broadway play “Race” in June, joining a cast that also will include Dennis Haysbert.
Izzard, last on Broadway in the 2003 Roundabout production of “A Day in the Death of Joe Egg,” will portray the lawyer character currently played by James Spader in the Main Stem staging of the latest David Mamet play.
Haysbert will play a partner in the law firm, with Afton C. Williams as a young woman who works in the law office. Williams is currently the understudy for Kerry Washington, the thesp now playing the role.
The three new thesps will appear in the show for its final weeks on the boards. Izzard and Haysbert join June 21 for a nine-week stint, while Willamson takes over her role a week earlier.
Original cast member Richard Thomas, who plays a wealthy white man accused of raping a black woman, will remain with the show until it closes.
Written and directed by Mamet, “Race” shutters Aug. 21 at the Barrymore Theater. Venue will then house Ray Charles tuner “Unchain My Heart” starting in October.
