Justin Guarini is the latest “American Idol” alum to land on Broadway, with the performer tapped to appear in the upcoming tuner version of “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.”
The addition of a thesp familiar to auds via the hit FOX reality skein can sometimes — though not always — yield big box office benefits for a Main Stem production. Fantasia Barrino’s stint in “The Color Purple,” for instance, revitalized that musical’s sales, and Clay Aiken prompted notable upticks when he appeared in “Monty Python’s Spamalot.”
This week another former “Idol,” Jordin Sparks, joins the cast of “In the Heights.”
Guarini, who was a runner-up on the first season of “Idol,” will play one of the men who becomes entangled in the intersecting lives of a group of women in 1980s Madrid. Cast already includes Patti LuPone, Sherie Rene Scott, Laura Benanti and Brian Stokes Mitchell, among others.
Based on the 1988 film by Pedro Almodovar, “Women” has songs by David Yazbek and book by Jeffrey Lane (“Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”). Bartlett Sher (“South Pacific”) directs the Lincoln Center Theater production.
Tuner begins preview Oct. 2 ahead of a Nov. 4 opening at the Belasco Theater.
