Victor Garber, Patrick Wilson, Michael Stuhlbarg and Joe Mantello — in his first acting gig since the original Broadway run of “Angels in America” — are among the cast of the one-night-only reading of “The Normal Heart” on Broadway.
Joel Grey, who had a stint playing “Normal” protag Ned Weeks in the play’s original 1985 run, helms the reading. Jason Butler Harner and John Benjamin Hickey also star.
Since “Angels” in 1994, Mantello has gone on to an active career as a Broadway helmer, with a resume that includes “Wicked,” “Glengarry Glen Ross,” “Take Me Out” and “Assassins.” (He picked up a Tony each for the latter two.) Larry Kramer’s “Normal Heart” chronicles the early years of the AIDS epidemic. A 2004 revival starring Raul Esparza played the Public Theater in 2004.
Produced by Daryl Roth, the reading benefits a pair of nonprofit service orgs, the Actors Fund and Friends in Deed. Event is set for Oct. 18 at the Walter Kerr Theater, where current tenant “A Little Night Music” is dark that night.
