Broadway on the rise

Good reviews bring healthy B.O.

“American Idiot” doesn’t look so dumb: The Broadway tuner saw weekly sales shoot up last week in the wake of strong reviews.

B.O. tally for “Idiot” ($777,860) rose a whopping $315,000 — that’s 67% — over the prior frame. Also impressive was the rise of 40% (or $160,000) at “La Cage aux Folles” ($565,424), another show coming off a recent thumbs-up from Gotham critics, while “Come Fly Away” ($918,318) continued to take wing, climbing 10%.

Meanwhile, even without the benefit of much critical goodwill, “The Addams Family” ($1,402,725) continued to pack in auds (and landed at No. 3 in the top 10). The just-opened “Promises, Promises” ($912,885) also looked healthy, with a dip that didn’t seem remarkable given that it came in a week that accommodated comp-heavy press performances and opening night.Denzel Washington topliner “Fences” ($732,152 for seven previews) also had its share of press perfs last week, but thanks to Washington’s star power, the show’s B.O. actually managed to rise a bit.

In general the week was a good one along the Rialto, with total sales climbing about $900,000 to $22.1 million for 34 shows on the boards. The biggest rises were posted mostly at shows benefitting from the press attention of recent openings and the reviews they generated.

Five productions landed in the millionaires’ club, with “Addams” joined by “Wicked” ($1.565,019), “The Lion King” ($1,412,843), “Billy Elliot” ($1,221,108) and “Jersey Boys” ($1,079,432).

A handful of productions slipped, though few dips were dramatic. “Red” ($390,878) logged a notable 21% drop; it remains to be seen whether that’s an anomaly for a show that seems likely to land in the nominations spotlight in the current round of spring legit awards.

Attendance for the week was up by about 13,500 to 273,884, or about 82% of overall capacity. That’s slightly less than the 276,000 reported last year, but the percentage was about on par compared with the same week from the prior season.
