Baz Luhrmann’s company Bazmark and Aussie live event producer Global Creatures have pacted to create a stage tuner version of Luhrmann’s 1992 pic “Strictly Ballroom.”

A number of creatives from the film, including choreographer John O’Connell and production designer (and Bazmark co-owner) Catherine Martin, are expected to be involved in the brewing legit incarnation. Luhrmann, who will direct, will oversee a workshop of the developing material in Sydney in December.

“Ballroom” marks the second big stage announcement in recent weeks from Global Creatures, the creature-design specialist that is also working on a Broadway-targeted stage adaptation of “King Kong.” Company topper Carmen Pavlovic and Rob Brookman will produce for Global Creatures, which is also behind the successful stadium show “Walking With Dinosaurs.”

Luhrmann, who helmed the 2002 Broadway staging of “La Boheme,” has long discussed the possibility of a stage version of “Ballroom.” No production timeline or Broadway plans have yet been laid out, but it’s safe to assume the project will prove a likely a contender for a Main Stem slot.
