Weinsteins to challenge ‘Blue Valentine’ rating

MPAA gave Gosling-Williams drama NC-17 label

The Weinstein Company has opted to appeal the NC-17 rating the MPAA gave to drama “Blue Valentine” last week.

Move was expected by many in the industry, since the adults-only rating significantly reduces the chances of the film being seen by a wide audience.

“We are taking every possible step to contest the MPAA’s decision,” Harvey Weinstein said in a statement. “We respect the work of the MPAA and we hope, after having a chance to sit down with them, they will see that our appeal is reasonable, and the film, which is an honest and personal portrait of a relationship, would be significantly harmed by such a rating.”

“Blue Valentine,” a time-jumping depiction of a crumbling marriage, has been a critical fave along the festival circuit. Pic stars Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams.
