Vitagraph Films has acquired North American rights to Spain’s foreign-lingo Oscar entry “Even the Rain,” starring Gael Garcia Bernal.
Distrib principals David Shultz and Margot Gerber, who made the announcement Tuesday, plan a February release for the pic. It will go out in the top 15 markets.
Pic rolls out wide in Spain in January, having already had a qualifying run in that country. It also screened at the Toronto fest.
Directed by Iciar Bollain from a screenplay by Paul Laverty, “Rain” also features Luis Tosar and Carlos Aduviri. The film-within-a-film in “Even the Rain” chronicles some of Christopher Columbus’ exploits with the indigenous people he encountered in the Americas.
Pic was sold by Wild Bunch, with European agent Guy Amon of the Paris-based Leisure and Multimedia Consulting negotiating on Vitagraph’s behalf.
L.A.-based Vitagraph Films has doc “Ahead of Time: The Remarkable Life Story of Ruth Gruber” in theaters and will open “Today’s Special” on Nov. 19.
