OUTSIDE THE LAW, PREMIERING AT TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, SECURES DISTRIBUTOR
Algerian Academy Award submission will be Cohen Media Group’s first release
September 9, 2010: Charles S. Cohen, Edmondo Schwartz and Steve Scheffer have formed a new banner under the Cohen Media Group, LLC (CMG,) a new theatrical distribution company. Its first release is filmmaker Rachid Bouchareb’s “Outside the Law,” the Official Algerian submission to the 83rd Annual Academy Awards and Special Program presentation at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival, where the film will have its North American premiere.
Written and directed by Bouchareb, the French-Algerian film “Outside the Law” (“Hors-la-loi”) is a dramatic telling of the Algerian struggle for independence from France after WWII, and a continuation of Bouchareb’s Academy Award nominated “Days of Glory.” After losing their family home in Algeria, three brothers are scattered across the globe. Messaoud joins the French army fighting in Indochina; Abdelkader becomes a leader of the Algerian independence movement in France and Saïd moves to Paris to make his fortune in the shady clubs and boxing halls of Pigalle. Gradually, their interconnecting destinies reunite them in the French capital, where freedom is a battle to be fought and won.
“Outside the Law” premiered in competition at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. The film will open in the United States in November 2010.
Cohen Media Group will distribute outstanding independent, domestic and foreign films throughout North America. The company will release only a select number of films each year enabling it to fully commit its resources and attention so that each film reaches its full potential.
