SXSW announces award winners

'Tiny Furniture,' 'Brotherhood' top feature prizes

The South by Southwest Film Festival handed out round one of its juried and aud awards Tuesday, with helmer Lena Dunham nabbing the Narrative Feature prize and SXSW Chicken & Egg Emergent Narrative Woman Director award for her Gotham-set sophomore comedy “Tiny Furniture.”

Narrative competition jury bestowed a special award to the cast of David Robert Mitchell’s “Myth of the American Sleepover” and to thesp Brian Hasenfus for his perf in Garth Donovan’s “Phillip the Fossil.”

Jeff Malmberg’s “Marwencol,” about a man who builds a WWII-era fantasy town as therapy after a serious brain injury, won the docu feature prize, with the jury naming Rebecca Richman Cohen’s “War Don Don” runner-up.

Aud prize for feature film went to Will Canon’s drama “Brotherhood,” while Jim Bigham and Mark Moorman’s “For Once in My Life” received the docu award. Aud prizes in the fest’s other program strands will be announced Monday.

The 2010 SXSW Film Festival presents 134 features, including 64 world preems and 130 shorts. SXSW Film runs though Friday.
