‘Social Network’ lauded by Houston crix

Film continues dominance of award season

“The Social Network” continued its dominance of year-end accolades Saturday as the acclaimed drama about the founding of Facebook claimed the best picture prize and three other honors at the fourth annual awards presentation of the Houston Film Critics Society.

HFCS named Jesse Eisenberg top actor for his portrayal of Facebook mastermind Mark Zuckerberg (just days after Time magazine honored the real Zuckerberg as person of the year) and further fueled the “Social Network” juggernaut by giving the film trophies for director David Fincher and scribe Aaron Sorkin.

Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi thriller “Inception” was runner-up in the final HFCS awards tally, winning in two categories: cinematography (Wally Pfister) and original score (Hans Zimmer).

Other HFCS awards were given to Natalie Portman (“Black Swan”), actress; Christian Bale (“The Fighter”), supporting actor; Hailee Steinfeld (“True Grit”), supporting actress; “Restrepo,” documentary; “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” foreign film; “Toy Story 3,” animated film; and “We are Sex Bob-Omb!” (music and lyrics by Beck) from “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” original song.

“Jonah Hex” was dishonored with the inaugural HFCS award for worst picture.

Winners were announced Saturday during the annual HFCS awards program hosted by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Org also honored George Clooney as humanitarian of the year, and announced a special lifetime achievement prize for Texas native Sissy Spacek.

The 2010 HFCS cinematic achievement awards went to Hector Luna, founder and editor of C-47 Houston magazine, and Charles Dove, director of the Rice U. Media Center.
