The Gotham Independent Film Awards are always good for a little snarky podium-speak.

This year, Monday’s laid-back shindig, held at Cipriani Wall Street, saw Anne Hathaway thanking honoree James Schamus for casting her in “Brokeback Mountain” and saving her from a lifetime of playing cutesy royals. “Don’t get me wrong, I loved playing princesses,” said the actress. “Tiaras are the best.”

Bill Murray felt free to insult almost everyone in the room when he introduced honoree Robert Duvall. “His shadow is a better actor than 70% of the people in this room,” he declared. “And you know who you are!”

And there were plenty of cracks about what it means to be indie these days. As John Turturro said of the Gothams: “Everyone thinks once you’ve won one of these, you’ll only work for free.”
