Producers Ralph Singleton and Joan Singleton (“Because of Winn-Dixie”) are developing a feature based on Kathy Charles’ debut novel, “John Belushi Is Dead.”

Joan Singleton, who also penned the “Winn-Dixie” screenplay, plans to adapt the book and produce with her spouse through their 8790 Pictures banner.

Negotiations for the feature rights took place at the Chateau Marmont, where Belushi died in 1982. Tome, published by MTV Books in August, includes mentions of the deaths of Belushi, James Dean, Marilyn Monroe and Sharon Tate.

Story centers on a pink-haired young woman who prowls the most notorious crime scenes in Hollywood history. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she meets the reclusive tenant of a dilapidated apartment where a silent movie star once committed suicide.

Charles is represented by the Schmalz Agency.
