Sit down,” Clint Eastwood told the audience in his best Dirty Harry voice. The New York Film Festival crowd assembled at Alice Tully Hall was on its feet giving the helmer a standing O before his latest pic, “Hereafter,” closed the 48th annual fest on Sunday.
The Warner Bros. pic marks the helmer’s fourth film in the fest and his second collaboration with Matt Damon.
Damon, who also premiered “Inside Job” at NYFF, said he was “thrilled” and then subsequently “terrified” when Eastwood approached him about re-teaming after shooting “Invictus.”
“Clint initially wanted to shoot last fall and I was already booked on another movie,” thesp said at the Four Seasons Restaurant after-party. “I asked him to re-schedule but he was dead set on fall. So I thought I had lost the film. I ended up writing him an email that included three actors that I thought would be really good for the part. I said, ‘Here are three guys, around my age, that I always go see. Maybe one of them will work for you.’ Then a few weeks later I was looping ‘Invictus’ and Clint came in and said I’ve figured out a way to do it with you. I was back to feeling thrilled.”
