Carey Mulligan fielded the blond question at the Tribeca Grand Hotel launch for Fox Searchlight’s “Never Let Me Go” on Sept. 14.

“I did this the day the Oscar nominations came out because I thought I’d do something crazy,” she said, “and I had no one to hang out with.”

Mulligan’s “Never” co-star Andrew Garfield has his own angst: He’s known as the troubled child killer of “Boy A,” the doomed journalist of “Red Riding Trilogy” and now in “Never,” the subject of a scientific experiment. Doesn’t he ever want to play someone happy?

“They are tragic stories and life is tragic,” Garfield said. “But I’m an extremely happy human being. I dig joy, man.”
