Director Tony Gilroy, who was hired last week to helm Universal’s fourth installment in the “Bourne” franchise, tells Hollywood Elsewhere that neither Matt Damon nor the Jason Bourne character will be in the upcoming “Bourne” film.
“It’s a completely original screenplay,” Gilroy says. “This is not a reboot or a recast or a prequel. No one’s replacing Matt Damon. There will be a whole new hero, a whole new chapter…this is a stand-alone project.”
Earlier this year, Paul Greengrass, who had helmed the last two “Bourne” movies, departed the fourth project over creative differences with Uni. Speculation soon began that Matt Damon, who also worked with the director on “Green Zone,” wouldn’t be returning either.
“The easiest way to think of it is an expansion or a reveal,” Gilroy says. “Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he’s very much alive. What happened in the first three films is the trigger for what happens. I’m building a legend and an environment and a wider conspiracy…the world we’re making enhances and advances and invites Jason Bourne’s return [down the road].”
Universal has hinted that it hopes to release the pic in 2012.
