Focus announces Africa First winners

Five recipients to get funds to complete shorts

Africa First, Focus Features’ initiative to aide African filmmakers, announced the five directors who have won $10,000 apiece to complete shorts.

Winners in the third annual round of the program were Chika Anadu, Ebele Okoye and Julius Onah, all from Nigeria; Lev David of South Africa and Jacqueline Kalimunda of Rwanda.

The directors turned in treatments that ranged from a contemporary comedy-drama to a folk tale-inspired animated short.

In addition to cash prizes, the directors will be flown to New York for a weekend of workshops with one another, an advisory board and execs from Focus Features.

The filmmakers retain copyright and distribution rights to their projects, except for North American rights, which Focus retains.
