The Motion Picture Editors Guild is about to add 1,000 members to the 6,000 editors it already represents, thanks to a pending merger with a technicians local.

Memberships of the Burbank-based MPEG, which operates as Local 700 of the Intl. Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, and IATSE Local 683 have approved the merger. Local 683 reps video technicians, cinetechnicians and laboratory film technicians.

Local 700 members endorsed the merger with 2,055 votes in favor and 132 against. The merger will take effect Aug. 1 with Local 700 as the surviving unit.

“With the continuing changes in digital post-production technology, we felt a merger was in everyone’s interest in the long run,” said Ronald G. Kutak, exec director of Local 700.

IATSE has more than 100,000 members. Along with the Cinematographers Guild, which operates as Local 600 and has over 6,000 members, the MPEG is one of the largest IATSE locals.
