Duo move to FilmDistrict

Alperovich, Liang tapped for acquisitions duty

Peter Schlessel and Bob Berney’s new company FilmDistrict has made a key hire in Adrian Alperovich, who ankled Sony to become prexy of acquisitions and operations. Alperovich also becomes exec VP of GK Films. He’ll report directly to Schlessel.

In a second hire, FilmDistrict has named Josie Liang acquisitions coordinator, reporting to Alperovich.

Schlessel and Alperovich have a long history. They worked together several times at Sony, most recently at Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, which Schlessel left to become prexy of Graham King and Tim Headington’s GK Films and launch FilmDistrict.Liang worked for Schlessel at Sony. She also did a stint at Circle of Confusion.

At FilmDistrict, Alperovich will spearhead all acquisitions for the financing, production and distribution company, as well as handle day-to-day operations.

“I’m thrilled to be reuniting with Peter at FilmDistrict,” Alperovich said. “He and Graham have formed a company with endless possibilities in the film space with exciting goals.”

Alperovich’s GK Film duties will include shepherding the ancillary rights of GK Films that are distributed by Sony theatrically, including upcoming Johnny Depp-Angelina Jolie starrer “The Tourist” and Martin Scorsese’s 3D entry “Hugo Cabret.”

“I’ve known and worked with Adrian for about 20 years,” Schlessel said. “With his varied background across multiple platforms, I think he will be an incredible asset in helping us launch a premiere distribution company.”

Alperovich was most recently senior exec VP and general manager at Sony Worldwide, running operations. He spent 15 years at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, where he oversaw the international side of the biz and developed new strategies.

FilmDistrict has not yet announced its first release. Company was founded by King and Headington.

Earlier this month, a cadre of former Berney colleagues joined FilmDistrict. Berney remains based in New York; Schlessel in Los Angeles.
