The inaugural Counter Culture, Counter Cinema: An Avant-Garde Film Festival opens tonight with screenings of “Flaming Creatures,” “Lupe” and “Fuses.”
Fest, which runs through Oct. 16, will take place at the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles. The event is a collaborative effort between PDC and MOCA.
“Cinema extravaganza” aims to showcase the alliance between experimental cinema and counter-cultural activity. While New York has generally been considered the mecca for avant-garde film, fest organizers hope to highlight a surge in Los Angeles alternative cinema.
Highlights include a panel discussion with Jonas Mekas, Carolee Schneemann, MM Serra and David James and a program of films made in L.A. and distributed in New York City.
Proceeds will benefit MOCA and the New York Film-makers’ Cooperative. Passes and individual tickets will be available at the door.
