Academy taps Oscar producers

Bruce Cohen, Don Mischer will helm Feb. 27 awards telecast

Oscar’s opting for two new sets of eyes, with Bruce Cohen and Don Mischer tapped to produce the 83rd annual Academy Awards telecast, the first time at the helm of the Oscarcast for the veteran producers.

Mischer will also serve as director of the Feb. 27 telecast on ABC. Tom Sherak, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, made the announcement Tuesday evening and cited the work by the duo on producing the Acad’s inaugural Governor Awards event at the Kodak Theater last November.

Cohen won an Oscar with Dan Jinks as a producer of 1999’s picture winner “American Beauty” while Mischer has produced countless kudocasts and live event telecasts, ranging from the Primetime Emmy Awards — including this year’s telecast Aug. 29 — to Olympic opening ceremonies.

Adam Shankman and Bill Mechanic produced this year’s Oscarcast.

“I fell in love with the Oscars as an eight-year-old kid, the night my grandmothers let me stay up to watch for the first time,” Cohen said.

Cohen and Jinks were nominated in the Best Picture category in 2008 for “Milk.” His TV credits include “Pushing Daisies,” “Traveler” and “Side Order of Life,” all as executive producer; he also exec produced “Movies Rock” in 2007 with Mischer.

Mischer’s earned 15 Emmy Awards, 10 Directors Guild of America Awards, two NAACP Image Awards and a Peabody Award.
