Venice fest to celebrate Italian comedy

It will unspool 30 local laffers in retro

The 67th Venice Film Festival will celebrate Italian comedies, the country’s most lucrative but often critically reviled genre, with an extensive retro.

Italian Comedy: The State of Things, curated by critics Marco Giusti, Domenico Monetti and Luca Pallanch, will comprise 30 laffers shot between 1937 and 1988, the fest said.

A large contingent of comic stars, including Carlo Verdone, Christian De Sica and Paolo Villaggio, will be disembarking on the lagoon at Venice, as well as helmers including Mario Monicelli, whose “Big Deal on Madonna Street” is considered a classic.

Fest runs Sept. 1-11.
