Here comes a new generation — and some seasoned players — advancing to higher-profile projects
With a flair for the dark and the dramatic, this Russian designer has built her career on the unmistakable look of films like “Night Watch” and “Day Watch,” both directed by Timur Bekmambetov. Her work can also be seen in the spy drama “Wanted,” starring Angelina Jolie. Next up for Avdyushko is “The Darkest Hour,” which features Emile Hirsch and Olivia Thirlby.
A veteran of dozens of commercials and a noted designer on musicvideos like Christina Aguilera’s “Fighter” and Marilyn Manson’s “Beautiful People,” it’s only natural that features came calling to Beadle. Floria Sigismondi’s rock saga “The Runaways,” starring Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning, is the latest to showcase Beadle’s talents. Her distinct work has earned her three MVPA awards for styling.
Only in his late 20s, Beaumont designed the sound for many hugely popular game releases, including Microsoft’s deep, dark thriller “Alan Wake,” Capcom’s “Lost Planet 2,” and Sega’s “Bayonetta.” The designer was honored with a Golden Reel Award in 2009 for “Gears of War 2.” He took home his first Golden Reel trophy in 2006 for “Shin Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams.”
Alan Edward Bell
A longtime collaborator with helmers such as Rob Reiner and Frank Darabont, Bell’s credits include “The Story of Us” and “The Green Mile.” He received an ACE Award nomination for “(500) Days of Summer.” Upcoming titles include Rob Letterman’s “Gulliver’s Travels,” featuring Jack Black. He’s currently editing Francis Lawrence’s “Water for Elephants.”
With credits that include indie titles like Tom McCarthy’s “The Visitor” and broad comedies such “The Bounty Hunter,” starring Gerard Butler and Jennifer Aniston, Bokelberg has twice been nominated for ASC awards. In 2008, he got the nod for a Frank Darabont-helmed episode of NBC skein “Raines” and a year later for the same network’s “My Own Worst Enemy.” The d.p. recently wrapped helmer McCarthy’s third film “Win Win,” starring Paul Giamatti and Amy Ryan.
A graduate of the USC masters program in film production, Cragg is the first d.p. to win an ASC student award and return to win in the television cinematography category. The latter was for his work on “CSI” in 2009. Forthcoming projects include “The Killing Game” with Samuel L. Jackson. Cragg also just booked the Steven Spielberg-produced “Terra Nova” series for Fox.
With credits like “War of the Worlds,” “Fantastic Four,” and “American Gangster” from his days working in art and prop departments, Grimes has worked across genres. As production designer on “The Wrestler,” he received an ADG Award nom for his gritty, authentic work. His upcoming films include John Curran’s “Stone,” which features Robert De Niro and Edward Norton.
Haworth is wrapping his first feature as production designer — Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s “The Thing” — having earned his place there through his work as art director on many of the biggest and most distinctive looking films around. His credits include “Avatar,” both “Transformers” films, “Men in Black 2,” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”
Formerly the production designer on the popular Fox drama “House,” Hutman now works on the hit TV musical “Glee,” for which he just received an Emmy nom for outstanding art direction for a single-camera series. His work on the show also earned him an ADG nomination. Hutman’s previous credits include on-set dresser for Quentin Tarantino’s “Jackie Brown.”
Korner shot three films — “The Wackness,” “The Informers,” and “The Wind and the Water” — that went on to be successful at Sundance before she turned 30. A winner of the Kodak Vision award from Women in Film in 2009, Korner is now at work on “My Soul to Take” for director Wes Craven.
Suttirat Anne Larlarb
costume designer and production designer
The multitalented Larlarb has worked as an art director, production designer and costume designer. Her work on “Slumdog Millionaire” led to a 2009 Costume Designers Guild Award. Upcoming costume work includes “The American,” starring George Clooney. Larlarb’s work both in production and costumes will be featured in “127 Hours,” which pairs her again with director Danny Boyle.
Yorick Le Saux
Audiences at Cannes have been familiar with Le Saux’s work since “Swimming Pool” became an official selection at the festival in 2003. Other films shot by him like “The Singer” have also screened there. In 2008, Le Saux worked with Tilda Swinton on “Julia.” The actress then recommended him for Luca Guadagnino’s “I Am Love.” He also shot “Carlos,” Olivier Assayas’ TV biopic of Carlos the Jackal.
With a resume that covers the gamut of film, television, commercial and video work, Line has been nominated twice for best styling at the MVPA Awards. Recently she did costumes for the pilot and first season of “10 Things I Hate About You.” Now she’s at work on “Pretty Little Liars” for ABC Family.
One of the youngest-ever graduates of both the London Film School and the American Film Institute, Lukas was invited to join d.p. union Local 600 before he turned 25. His credits since 2006 include 15 films as grip, gaffer, camera operator and second unit d.p. He’s also been d.p. on five movies, including this year’s “Verdict” and “Kleshnov.”
After working as 2nd unit d.p. on “Terminator 3:
Rise of the Machines” and “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider,” the veteran commercials director graduated to 1st Unit d.p. on “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” when fellow cinematographer Dariusz Wolski had to fulfill another commitment. Seresin went on to become d.p. on “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.” Now he’s prepping Matthew Vaughn’s “X-Men: First Class.”
One of the busiest 2nd unit d.p.’s in Australia, Shield’s work includes “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” “Ghost Rider” and “Secretariat.” He’s now a member of Local 600, and his 1st unit work can be seen in “The Square,” which recently opened in the U.S. Shield recently shot 2nd unit on “The Green Lantern.”
In 2010, the Belgian-born Speeckaert won a Lumiere Award and earned a Cesar nom for “In the Beginning (“A l’origine”), which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival that year. Speeckaert’s other titles include the recent “22nd of May” with helmer Koen Mortier and “Man of Steel,” Feature Film winner at the Berlin Film Festival in 2000.
A graduate of the American Film Institute and the U. of Michigan, Spitz has acquired credits on many indie films, including “The Wackness.” Her work can be seen in the dark comedy and Sundance fest entry “Cyrus.” She also just finished “I’m With Cancer,” featuring Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Noted for the haunting imagery in Timur Bekmambetov’s horror films “Night Watch” and “Day Watch,” Trofimov went on to shoot Sergey Bodrov’s “Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan,” which was nominated for a foreign-language film Oscar in 2008. Upcoming releases for this Russian d.p. include “Yakuza Girl,” also directed by Bodrov and co-directed by Gulshat Omarova, which was shot in Japan.
A practitioner who’s at ease in both film and television, Via cut “Stephen King’s The Mist” for helmer Frank Darabont, and two seasons and a pilot of “Sons of Anarchy.” A former assistant on “Arrested Development” promoted to editor on “The Shield,” Via is now editing Darabont’s “The Walking Dead” series.
Renowned for her ability to create natural environments that reflect and reveal the inner workings of a film’s characters, Weinberg was first noticed for her work in the Academy Award-nominated “Frozen River.” Born in Israel, Weinberg’s credits feature many notable indie features including “Blue Valentine.” She recently wrapped “Ceremony” starring Uma Thurman and “My Idiot Brother” featuring Paul Rudd and Zooey Deschanel.
Young’s work was noticed early when his first short, “Pariah,” became an official selection at Sundance in 2008. The Howard U. grad also shot “Between Us,” which received an honorable mention at the Tribeca Film Festival. Young just wrapped “Restless City” and is prepping Sebastian Silva’s “Second Child.”
