Universal Pictures Intl. has boarded helmer-thesp Detlev Buck’s next project starring Matthias Schweighoefer.

Based on a screenplay by Anika Decker (“Rabbit Without Ears”), comedy follows an unsuccessful actor whose life takes a dramatic turn when he is mistakenly cast as a woman in a Hollywood pic. Alexandra Maria Lara (“Farewell”) co-stars.

Project was previously known as “Woman in Love” but now has the working title of “Rubbeldiekatz,” which translates to “rub the cat” in German, a regional colloquialism that means presto or voila!

UPI joins Berlin-based Film 1 and Boje Buck on the co-production, with Christian Grass, U prexy of international production and acquisitions, and Film 1’s Henning Ferber and Marcus Welke co-producing.

Pic will lense early next year in Berlin, Hamburg and the coastal town of St. Peter Ording.

Universal will release the film in late 2011 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.Buck also stars in the comedy along with Max von Thun, Maximilian Brueckner and Denis Moschitto.

“Rubbeldiekatz” is U’s latest local release, joining Lars Kraume’s apocalyptic drama “Days to Come” and Christine Hartmann’s tyke pic “Hanni and Nanni,” both put out via U’s distribution pact with UFA Cinema.
