Troika goes on Steinbeck’s quest

Film is based on author's retelling of the Arthurian legend

Feature rights to John Steinbeck’s “The Acts of King Arthur and his Noble Knights” have been acquired by Troika Pictures, the production/financing shingle headed by Robert L. Stein and Michael A. Helfant.

Stein and Helfant will produce; Jennifer Lee will adapt the screenplay.

Published posthumously, “The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights” is Steinbeck’s retelling of the Arthurian legend, based on the Winchester Manuscript text of Thomas Malory’s “Le Morte d’Arthur,” first published in 1485.

Steinbeck interpreted and rewrote seven of the legends in his book.

The first film being developed by Troika is based on the quest of Arthur’s knights Gawain, Ewain and Marhalt.

Story revolves around a young knight as he learns the meaning of the relationship between maidens and knights, in the process becoming a man and a true Knight of the Round Table.

“This first film is a compelling romantic comedy adventure targeted for the youth audience,” Stein said.

Troika is casting contempo thriller “Careful What You Wish For,” penned by Chris Frisina and directed by Jake Nava. “Careful” is due to start lensing in July.

Stein was most recently head of the motion pictures department at Paradigm. Previously, he headed the worldwide motion picture department at William Morris Agency and was a founding partner of UTA.

Helfant was most recently prexy and chief operating officer of Marvel Studios, and previously COO of Beacon Pictures.

Troika Pictures is backed by Florida entrepreneur Philip Cohen.
