‘Tree’ to close Cannes

Julie Bertucelli's Oz-set drama to end fest

The Cannes Film Festival announced today that scribe-helmer Julie Bertucelli’s Oz-set drama “The Tree” will screen as the out of competition closing film of this year’s festival.

Based on the novel “Our Father Who Art in the Tree” by Brisbane-born writer Judy Pascoe, pic tells the story of a recently widowed mother of four who hears her dead husband talking to her from the tree in the suburban family garden. Charlotte Gainsbourg stars in the English-language production along with Marton Csokas (“Alice in Wonderland”) and Aden Young.

“The Tree” is co-produced by Gallic shingle Les Films du Poisson and Aussie outfit Taylor Media, with Memento Films Intl., handling sales. Le Pacte is handling French distribution.

Based on an adaption of the novel by Elizabeth J. Mars, pic reps French-born filmmaker Bertucelli’s second Cannes appearance following 2003’s “Since Otar Left,” which nabbed the Critics’ Week best film award.
