British film and stage actor Tom Hardy (“Inception”) is set to star opposite Reese Witherspoon and Chris Pine in 20th Century Fox’s comedy “This Means War.”
McG is directing the pic, which Will Smith’s shingle Overbrook Entertainment is producing. Witherspoon also is a producer.
“This Means War” has long been in the making, but gained momentum in recent months when scribe Timothy Dowling put a fresh spin on the storyline. His script revolves around two spies who are lifelong friends until falling in love with the same woman.
Bradley Cooper was to have played one of the two male lead opposite Witherspoon, but dropped out because of scheduling conflicts.
Hardy’s upcoming projects include martial- arts pic “Warrior” and “Mad Max 4: Fury Road.” Previous credits include Charles Bronson biopic “Bronson,” “Black Hawk Down” and “Layer Cake.”
Hardy is repped by CAA.
