Screen Australia argues its case

Producer Offset is not enough alone, says org

SYDNEY – State-backed funding body Screen Australia has revealed it has told the government that the Producer Offset is not enough to save the local film industry on its own.

Making public its submission to the review into film funding Friday, the agency said that it thought that the offset in combination with Screen Australia coin is generally working well.

The submission also flagged the Aussie vidgaming industry as an area that the offset should be extended to. There is a strong argument for the games sector to access a modified Producer Offset in order to retain intellectual property and grow sustainable Australian businesses, said Screen Australian topper Ruth Harley.

Furthermore, Australian content in a digital environment remains the greatest unknown and Screen Australia has a vital role in supporting compelling content.

The release came as the funding body announced its most recent round of funding, 13 projects with a combined investment of A$15 million ($13 million).

Features to receive coin included vet helmer Fred Schepisi’s “The Eye of the Storm,” based on the novel by Patrick White, and exec produced by Jonathan Shteinman, Edward Simpson, Bob Marcs and James Vernon.

“Animal Kingdom” producer Liz Watts is back with a German-Australian co-prod “Lore,” which tells the story of a group of children in 1945. Pic is helmed by Cate Shortland (“Somersault”) and also produced by Karsten Stter, Benny Drechsel, Paul Welsh and Gabriele Kranzelbinder.

Third pic to receive coin is tyro helmer Kieran Darcy-Smith’s “Say Nothing,” penned by Darcy-Smith and Felicity Price and produced by Angie Fielder.
