‘Sapphires’ to shine on the bigscreen

Blair set to helm Aussie musical

Oz hit legit tuner, “The Sapphires,” is set to get the feature treatment.

Tuner, penned by Tony Briggs in 2005, follows the fortunes of four Aboriginal women who form a singing group in the 1960s, styled on The Supremes, and are sent to Vietnam to entertain Australian troops.

It’s inspired by the true story of Brigg’s mother, Laurel Robinson, and aunt, Lois Peeler.

Pic is produced by Goalpost Pictures and will be helmed by Wayne Blair from a screenplay by Briggs.

News follows on from the success of indigenous tuner-cum-pic “Bran Nue Dae,” which took nearly A$7 million ($5.8 million) at the local B.O.

“The Sapphires,” which picked up a Helpmann award in 2005 for best play, recently returned to Sydney for a hit season.
