Fresh off his visual effects Oscar win for “Avatar,” Stephen Rosenbaum has joined the staff of Digital Domain.
Rosenbaum, who also won the vfx Oscar for “Forrest Gump,” will hold the title vfx supervisor and report to Gloria Borders, prexy of feature film operations.
Rosenbaum told Daily Variety he will go back and forth between DD’s Venice, Calif., HQ and its Vancouver office and the studio may expand further.
DD won the 2009 vfx Oscar for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and is in production on “Tron Legacy,” “Thor,” “The A-Team” and “Real Steel.” Rosenbaum will not join any of those projects but is looking to bring a new major project to DD.
“My experience on ‘Avatar’ is we’re going to be moving more toward digital characters and DD is a leader on that front,” he said. “On ‘Tron,’ they’ve created the perfect digital character and I think it opens up a new avenue for regular, non-f/x movies as well as visual effects movies.”
During three years on “Avatar” he worked on performance capture and principal photography in both California and New Zealand, as well as overseeing visual effects sequences at Weta Digital.
