R rating stands for Holocaust docu ‘Film’

MPAA rejects Oscilloscope appeal

The MPAA has upheld its R rating of Holocaust docu “A Film Unfinished” after Oscilloscope Laboratories appealed the classification earlier this month.

In a 12-to-3 vote, the appeals board cited “disturbing images of Holocaust atrocities including graphic nudity” in its decision.

“A Film Unfinished,” which won awards at fests including Hot Docs and Sundance, documents an uncompleted Nazi propaganda film shot in the Warsaw Ghetto in 1942. Ghetto survivor Hana Avrutzky and director Yael Hersonski both made arguments for a reduced rating.

Board members were also asked to consider the rating of Steven Spielberg’s “The Last Days,” which features a mass execution and extensive nudity. That film received a PG-13 rating for “graphic images and descriptions of Holocaust atrocities.”

“In a world where young people are bombarded with meaningless entertainment, it’s unfortunate that a film with real educational and historic value would be denied to them,” said Adam Yauch, Oscilloscope founder and a member of music group Beastie Boys.
