British thesp David Oyelowo has joined DreamWorks’ “The Help” as a Southern preacher opposite Viola Davis, Emma Stone and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Pic’s based on the book authored by Kathryn Stockett and has been adapted by Tate Taylor, who’s directing. Film centers on the conflicted and complex relationships between Southern women and their housekeepers at the beginning of the civil-rights movement.

Chris Columbus, Michael Barnathan and Mark Radcliffe will produce through 1492 Pictures. Taylor also will produce with his partner, Brunson Green, via Harbinger Pictures.

Oyelowo won the actor trophy at the Royal Television Society Awards in London for his performance in the PBS miniseries “Small Island.” He’s set to star in Lee Daniel’s “Selma” opposite Hugh Jackman and will be seen next year in Fox’s “Rise of the Apes.”
