IFC Films picks up 3 SXSW pics for VOD bow

'Hate,' 'Le Donk' and 'Stripes' will be available day-and-date with fest

In a move that mirrors its first partnership with the South by Southwest film fest last spring, IFC Films has picked up three films playing at the upcoming event for a simultaneous bow on VOD.

Bryan Poyser’s Sundance competitor “Lovers of Hate,” Shane Meadows’ comedy “Le Donk and Scor-zay-zee” and Emmett Malloy’s docu “The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights” will be made available on demand on the same day that the films unspool at the fest in Austin, Texas.

Two pics from last year’s SXSW will be packaged along with the new films: Daryl Wein’s romantic comedy “Breaking Upwards” and John Bryant’s road comedy “The Overbrook Brothers.”

The five films will be showcased on “Direct From SXSW” platforms through cable operators including Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications, Time Warner and Bright House, serving some 40 million homes. The VOD run will last for about a month.

“It’s important to us to continue to help filmmakers find bigger audiences both during and after the festival, and this is a great opportunity,” said SXSW fest topper Janet Pierson.

IFC was at the vanguard of the fest-VOD premiere trend when it made several SXSW films available during last year’s event. The 2009 partnership included Joe Swanberg’s “Alexander the Last.”

White Stripes,” following the band’s 2007 Canadian tour, preems at SXSW on March 12. Docu preemed at last year’s Toronto Film Festival.

“Lovers of Hate” bows on March 15 in Austin, where helmer Poyser is a local. Comedy stars Chris Doubek, Alex Karpovsky and Heather Kafka. Filmmaker brothers Jay and Mark Duplass exec produced.

“Le Donk” bowed in the Edinburgh fest last summer and makes its North American debut on March 16. Comedy, made in five days and starring Paddy Considine and Dean Palinczuk, is about a failed rocker and roadie who attempts to turn his life around by helping a budding rapper called Scor-zay-zee.

“Breaking Upwards” will be released theatrically via IFC Films in early April.

SXSW Film Fest runs March 12-21.

Film Review: Trey Anastasio in 'Between Me and My Mind'

Trey Anastasio doesn’t look like a rock star. With his thick rimless glasses and flop of sandy red hair, you might say he resembles John Sebastian, but really, he looks like a mashup of Mike White and Jon Cryer and the filmmaker Chris Smith. He’s an appealingly ordinary shaggy-geek dude, like some guy you might [...]
