CBS pushes back ‘Beastly’

Hudgens-starrer is due out March 18, 2011

CBS Films has opted to avoid a clash of the teen titans this summer.

Studio announced Monday that it has pushed back the launch of Vanessa Hudgens-starrer “Beastly” to March 18, 2011.

Beastly” was set for release July 30, the same date Universal skedded “Charlie St. Cloud,” starring Zac Efron, meaning the “High School Musical” alums (and rumored sweethearts) would have had to vie for the same demo: young femmes. In its new date, “Beastly” could potentially tap into the younger crowd during the Easter holiday frame.

The move, which was announced via the film’s Facebook page, also gives CBS Films ample time to attract more licensees around “Beastly,” as the company tries to turn the pic into its own “Twilight.” Backed by a slew of consumer products, studio hopes the deal will boost the film’s profile at the retail level.

CBS Films is looking to lock down such deals at this week’s Intl. Licensing Expo in Las Vegas for “Beastly” and its other projects.

“Beastly” co-stars Brit thesp Alex Pettyfer as a cursed New York teen in the modern spin on “Beauty and the Beast,” with Hudgens as his love interest. Pettyfer will topline DreamWorks’ sci-fi pic “I Am Number Four” on Feb. 18, while Hudgens stars in Zack Snyder’s “Sucker Punch,” which Warner Bros. will release March 25.

CBS Films’ only remaining release for the year is “Faster,” starring Dwayne Johnson and Billy Bob Thornton, on Nov. 24.
