Arab Film Fest comes to L.A.

'Masquerades' set as lead bow

The 14th annual Arab Film Festival lands in Los Angeles with award-winning Algerian comedy “Masquerades” as lead bow.

“Masquerades” is the darkly satiric tale of a young man who lies about his narcoleptic sister’s engagement to a wealthy European to stop the teasing she endures in their village. A story of tradition, rebellion and women in Algeria emerges.

“Masquerades,” helmed and co-written by Lyes Salem, has won the best first film award in Carthage and the film award at both the Cairo and Dubai fests.

The Arab film fest, which also took place in San Francisco, Berkeley and San Jose, will culminate at the Writers Guild of America Theater in Beverly Hills beginning Oct. 22 at 6 p.m.
