Amalgam boards ‘Rampart’ funding

Buscemi, Heche, Weaver among new cast adds

Oren Moverman’s cop crime-thriller “Rampart” will be the first pic financed by newly formed Amalgam Features.

Scripted by Moverman and James Ellroy, pic toplines Woody Harrelson, Ice Cube and Ben Foster. Recently added to the cast are Steve Buscemi, Anne Heche, Cynthia Nixon, Sigourney Weaver and Robin Wright.

Amalgam, based in L.A., is backed by private equity.

WME Global’s Alexis Garcia finalized Amalgam’s deal at the Toronto Film Fest. With the financing closed, Moverman intends to begin shooting Oct. 25 in Los Angeles.

Set against the backdrop of the scandal within the L.A.P.D. Rampart Division in the late 1990s, film is the fictional account of a veteran police officer (Harrelson) caught up in the scandal, and his search for redemption.

Producers are Lawrence Inglee, Clark Peterson and Foster. Amalgam’s Kenneth Kao and Michael DeFranco will exec produce.

“Rampart” reunites Moverman and Harrelson, who worked together on Moverman’s critically acclaimed “The Messenger.”

Ellroy is currently touring North America with his second memoir, “The Hilliker Curse.”

Amalgam pact is one of several key deals WME Global is working on in Toronto. WME also over the weekend closed financing for Mickey Rourke mob pic “The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer,” which Natural Selection is producing. Unit co-repped with UTA domestic rights to “Super,” which landed a U.S. distribution deal with IFC Films on Sunday, as well as U.S. rights to “Dirty Girl,” which also sold on Sunday to the Weinstein Co.
